Mangaluru: Fishing has been banned for a period of two months from June 1 to July 31 in Karnataka coast. A notification under the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act 1986 has been issued, barring fishing activity during the rainy season.
However, because of prevailing uncertain climate, several mechanized boats are reaching the shore and getting moored before the beginning of the ban period.
Fishing through mechanized boats and traditional boats using inboard or outboard engines of over ten HP by using any kind of nets or other equipment has been barred. Traditional and country boats, which use engines of less than ten HP capacity, can however, undertake fishing.
The fishermen and fishing boats which violate fishing ban order will expose themselves to the punishments and fines mentioned in the said act. They will also be ineligible to get benefit of subsidy for purchase of diesel for a period of one year.
