Mangaluru: Fishing through motorised boats in the sea has been banned on the Karnataka coast from June 1 to July 31, as the rainy season also happens to be the breeding time for fish.

“Fishing in the waters can have an adverse effect on the breeding of fish. So, fishing with motorised boats has been banned for 61 days like every year,” said deputy director of the Fisheries department.

Those violating the rule and using boats having a capacity of more than 10 horsepower (HP) for fishing purposes will lose the diesel subsidy for one year. They will also become ineligible for refund of the central excise duty.
