Puttur: Department of Zoology, St Philomena College Puttur organised inaugural function of Large Scale Vermicomposting Unit on February 18, 2016 at Zoology Block of the College.

Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monterio, Campus Director and chairman of Centre for PG Studies and Research inaugurated the plant and said, ‘Nature friendly activities will protect our nature from degradation. Vermicomposting is a cost effective technique for solid waste management. It can generate natural fertilizer.’

Prof. Leo Noronha, Principal in his presidential address said, ‘Vermicomposting unit of our college sends a message loud and clear to students in particular and the society in general that the fertility of soil needs to be preserved and thereby better productivity is made possible. By setting up vermicomposting unit, the organic waste of our college is utilized to produce manure. Waste can also become a profitable and productive material through this venture.’

Prof. Meenakshi K, HOD of Zoology welcomed the gathering and in her introductory speech she said, ‘Vermicomposting is a feasible option for diverting large quantities of organics from the waste stream. Vermiculture is an innovative practice and we have started vermiculture in our department to tackle the problem of waste management. We attempt to develop awareness among youth by using organic waste as useful resource. The vermicast produced by this, can be a substitute for chemical fertilizer and also it minimizes environmental pollution.’
