Udupi Manipal: The Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery, Kasturba Medical College & Hospital, Manipal University, Manipal is organizing a Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Update in Cardiac Surgery: A glorious past and bright future on August 30, 2015. The first open heart surgery was performed in 1953. Even till late 1960s the patients with cardiac diseases had a bleak future. Within a short span of 50-60 years the field of cardiac surgery has evolved exponentially and most operations are safe today with an overall mortality of about 6%. It can be said that the developments in cardiac surgery by the pioneers has evolved the operations from an art to a science with reproducible results worldwide.

Dr. Ganesh Kamath Professor and Head of CVTS Dept, KMC Manipal said during the media conference at Press Club Udupi that even today when a patient is informed that he needs a heart operation there is a sense of panic within him and his family.
