Lourdes Central School organises global warming ISA project

Mangaluru: As part of International School Accreditation (ISA) project on Global warming, an elocution and essay writing competition were organised for the students of classes VII and VIII of Lourdes Central School.

The participants spoke about the impact of global warming and the essays were written on solutions to stop polluting the environment and conserve it for the future.

Fr Robert D’Souza, the principal and Belita Mascarenhas, the vice principal were present on the occasion. Sandhya and Fr Nelson judged the competitions. Fr Robert D'Souza addressed the gathering and appreciated the participants for their efforts. He adviced all the students to participate actively in co-curricular activities and also thanked the judges and teachers for their time and efforts.

The teachers-in –charge were Lavina Castelino, Rekha Naveen and Lavina Serrao. Suheana of class VII compered the programme.

A talk on global warming was also recently organised on the occasion of International Day of Climate Action, for the students of class VII as part of the school's ISA project.

The resource person, Benzita Roshal Ferrao, a clinical psychologist and skilled speaker also an active member of the Toast Masters Club, Mangaluru initiated the talk by informing the students the possibility of global warming becoming a potential threat to life on earth. A short video clipping with contents related to the greenhouse gases, its balance and our role as humans to help control it was shown. This was followed by a discussion about the different countries contributing to global warming. She also explained how global warming was caused by UK and Australia as industrialized countries is different from the same caused by Mexico and India as industrializing countries.

She further discussed how global warming caused problems like diseases, rising sea levels, agricultural issues and others. The concept of waste management being a leading industry internationally in helping control global warming was introduced to the audience. As children, they were asked to contribute to the same by practicing recycling, saving electricity and planting trees. The session concluded by answering the queries at the end of the talk.

As part of the ISA project activity, a skype conversation was held with the students of UK regarding ‘The emission of carbon dioxide and finding measures to minimise it’.

The ISA project at Lourdes Central School is being coordinated by teachers Harshitha S and Henry Mascarenhas.
