National Seminar on 'Applications of Radioisotopes and Radiation in Industry and Agriculture'

Mangaluru: St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru and National Association for Applications of Radioisotopes and Radiation in Industry (NAARRI), Mumbai in association with Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology (BRIT), Navi Mumbai organized a national seminar on Applications of Radioisotopes & Radiation in Industry, Healthcare and Agriculture. The seminar is organized by the Physics Department and is sponsored by Board of Research in Nuclear Science (BRNS), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India.

The seminar was inaugurated by SA Bharadwaj, Chairman, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Govt. of India on September 10 at 9am at Fr L F Rasquinha Hall, LCRI, St Aloysius College, Mangaluru. In his inaugural address he narrated the importance of radioisotopes in various field of science namely, Healthcare and agriculture. He said natural radiation is present everywhere which cannot be avoided. The amount of radiation from nuclear power plants is always less than the allowed limit prescribed by the Radiation monitoring agencies. People should not be under the impression of wrong data and hence they have to refer the data published by International agencies.

Dr Pratibha Jolly, principal, Miranda House, University College for Women, University of Delhi and Member, Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet, Government of India, was the guest of honor. She narrated the importance of technology. Unless we update the technical capabilities we will perish. Shri N K Anand, President NAARRI spoke on the importance of learning new technologies by the young generations.

Fr Dionysius Vaz S J, rector, St Aloysius College Institutions presided over the function. In his presidential remarks he thanked all funding agencies of the seminar and all those who contributed to the success of the seminar. Rev Dr Praveen Martis SJ, Principal of the College gave his message and congratulated the participants who have been taken pain to attend the seminar in spite of their inconvenience of travel.

John John Chandy, secretary, NAARRI spoke about the scope of the seminar. Dr Chandra Shekhara Shetty, convener of the seminar welcomed the gathering and Dr Rita Crasta, organizing secretary proposed vote of thanks. Jenice Goveas from the Department of Chemistry compered the program.

Public Lecture

On the occasion of National seminar a public lecture is organized on 11th September 2018 at 5pm in the Eric Mathias Hall in the premises of the college. The topic of seminar is “Public Perceptions about Atomic Energy-Myths Vs Realities”. The lecture will be delivered by S K Malhotra, from the Department of Atomic Energy. It is open to all. All the general public are requested to make use of the opportunity.
