Manipal: Dr Sankar Prasad Gorthi, neurologist with national acclaim has joined Kasturba Hospital Manipal (KMC) as the head of department of neurology. Brig (Dr) Sankar Prasad was working in the capacity of professor and head of department of neurology in Army Hospital Research and Referral, and as consultant neurology at Army Medical Corps, New Delhi prior to joining here. He is a specialist in movement disorders, epilepsy and stroke.
Brig (Dr) Sankar Prasad is the recipient of prestigious International 8th Sardar Patel Award for Excellence in Neurosciences in 2014. He was also honored by Association of Indian Neurologists in America for his contribution to the Neurosciences in 2014. He was chosen for Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card for outstanding service in 2012. He did his DM (Neurology) from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
Dr M Dayananda, medical superintendent and COO, Kasturba Hospital announced that with specialist of stature of Dr Sankar Prasad joining the neurology department, Stroke clinic on Mondays and movement disorder clinic on Thursday will be launched. Movement disorder involve problems with too much or too little movement because of neurological conditions. Stroke clinic will provide assistance to patients who are at risk of having a stroke.
The epilepsy clinic will continue running on all Friday and this one of the few centers in India that is capable of offering the surgical (awake patient surgical procedure) intervention of epilepsy. The dementia clinic, is scheduled to function on all Wednesdays. Dementia Clinic attends to patients with loss of mental functions such as thinking, memory, and reasoning which interfere with the person’s independent daily functioning, Dr Dayananda added.
