Sisters drowned in abandoned stone quarries in separate incidents

Mangalore: Five sisters met a watery grave in abandoned laterite stone quarries in separate incidents reported from Moodbidri and Bajpe police station limits of Mangalore City Police on Sunday.

Heavy overnight rains lashing the region meant that the stone quarries located at Beluvai under Moodbidri PS and Daddi village in Yedapadavu-Mijar under Bajpe PS were filled to the brim and the unsuspecting girls who went to play there, were drowned.

Sukanya, 4-1/2 and her elder sister Suraksha, 7, daughters of Suresh who went out to play outside their house - Darkasth Mane at Beluvai slipped and fell in to the semi-filled stone quarry and were drowned.

The incident took place around 12.30pm. Locals brought out the dead bodies. The quarry incidentally belonged to the family where quarrying had stopped some three years ago and was partially filled. It has nearly seven feet of water.

Megha, 12, Vani, 11, and Yakshitha, 6, daughters of Vasu Shettigar too met a similar fate when they ventured out of the house during a let up in rains at Daddi. The quarry in which the trio were drowned was nearly 10 feet deep, local police officials said. Locals in this case too helped retrieve the bodies from the quarry. Revenue officials, who visited respective spots, supervised the autopsy procedure carried out in the local government hospitals.
