Udupi: Udupi Zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer Priyanka Mary Francis opined that there is urgent need to create awareness on consumer rights among the officers.
Speaking after inaugurating a training workshop for the officials over the consumer rights, the chief executive officer said, "Consumer rights are part of everyone's life and the awareness over the rights is more important. The government officials do not have sufficient knowledge and if at all they had, 50% of the file transaction burden would be lessened. Practical realities and its relation with the accessibilities should be understood. Instant food and cooked food should be tested for adulteration."
Deputy Commissioner T Venkatesh said consumers include everyone, as every individual has the necessity to purchase. He said adulteration is observed everywhere. Despite the regular warnings, digital weighing machines are less used while the age-old weighing equipment is used even today, he regretted.
The deputy commissioner added that weighing machines should be tested annually and should be sealed for authenticity.
