Veteran Congress leader Sankappa Rai passes away

Puttur: Former President of Dakshina Kannda Zilla Parishat and veteran Congress leader, Bellippady Sankappa Rai died on Wednesday. He was 85. He was admitted to a private hospital a few days back. Son of the late Perne Mayila Rai and the late Laxmi Rai, Sankappa Rai belonged to Bellippady Guthu and a resident of Kombettu, Puttur Taluk. He was unmarried.

Rai had been active in politics for five decades. He was a powerful Congressman of Undivided South Kanara. He was chosen as the president of the then Taluk Development board when he was just 25 in 1973-74, He was chosen for two terms as a member of the district Road Transport Authority, and had worked for running private buses to rural areas.

Congress leaders, Veerappa Moily, Rajya Sabha member, Oscar Fernandes, B Ramanath Rai and U T Khader, Shakuntala Shetty, J R Lobo, Mohiyuddin Bava, Abhayachandra Jain and Vasant Bangera, MLC, Ivan D’Souza and Nalin Kumar Kateel have condoled the death.
