Published On : 30 Aug 2016

Ahmedabad, Aug 30 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Jamnagar on Tuesday to launch the SAUNI Yojna irrigation scheme, a project he had initiated in 2012 as the Gujarat Chief Minister.

"Gujarat warmly welcomes Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Shri @narendramodi ji," Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani tweeted on Tuesday.

Modi had initiated the Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation (SAUNI) in September 2012.

Modi will also address a rally in Jamnagar after launching SAUNI.

The project aims at diverting the floodwater from Sardar Sarovar Dam to 115 dams of the water scarce Saurasthra region through a network of canal and pipelines. This would help irrigate 4.13 lakh hectares of land.

In phase one of the project, water would flow water into 10 dams in Morbi, Rajkot and Jamnagar districts.

"SAUNI project is engineering marvellous that will quench thirst of 11 drought-prone district of Saurashtra and bring fresh life to the region," Rupani tweeted.
