Published On : 29 Feb 2016

Hyderabad, Feb. 28 (PTI): A case of sedition has been filed against Rahul Gandhi, Sitaram Yechury and Arvind Kejriwal in Hyderabad following a lawyer's complaint to the metropolitan magistrate's court.

"Based on the directive of the court, a case was registered yesterday against nine persons, including Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Sitaram Yechury, JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and others, on the charge of sedition under Section 124(A) of the IPC," said Tafseer Iqubal, deputy commissioner of police, LB Nagar. "It may be forwarded to the police station concerned in Delhi," he added.

The court has fixed the hearing on March 4.

The FIR also names Congress leaders Anand Sharma and Ajay Maken, CPI leader D. Raja, JD(U) leader K.C. Tyagi, JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and JNU research scholar Umar Khalid.

In his complaint, lawyer Janardhan Goud said the leaders had visited the JNU campus and supported student activists despite being aware that Delhi police had registered a sedition case against Kanhaiya. This "amounted to sedition", he said.
