Monti Fest and Konkani Maanyata Divas in Mira Road

Every year September 8th, is celebrated as Monti Fest (Nativity of Mother Mary) in a very grand manner by all Konkani speaking people of Coastal regions. It is celebrated in Mira Road by majority of Mangalorean Catholics in grand style.

St. Joseph’s Konkani Welfare Association Mira Road is celebrating it as Associations Feast Day with grandeur. This year on 8th September the Association celebrated both “Konkani Manyata Divas “and “Novem Jevann”(with vegetarian delicacies) at 7.30 pm in the Church Hall.
The program began with a welcome dance, followed by welcoming the guests traditionally with “Paanpod Udaak” by Prasann niddodi, and welcomed by Association President Digo Rodrigues.

On the dais there were eminent personalities, as Chief Guest Bishop of Ajmer Rev. Fr. Pius D’Souza, Parish Priest and Spiritual director Fr. Melvynn D’Cunha, Maan Monis(writer, actor, director and musician) Shri John Mascarenhas Jerimeri, Holy Cross, Ankur and Sneha Sadan sisters along with President Digo Rodrigues, Secretary Sophy D’Sa, Treasurer Lawrence Mathias Cultural Secretary Jossy Gonsalves and Erstwhile President John Crasta were present.

Cultural Program was inaugurated by pounding the dried boiled paddy in the “Vaan” with “Musall”and rice was separated by using “Todpe”. This meaningful act, took us back to our village farming days.

Maan Monis John Mascarenhas was Felicitated with Flowers, Fruits, Shawl and Maan Patr. In his thanksgiving speech , he praised Konkani language related work done by St. Joseph’s Konkani Welfare Association in Mira Road. Rev. Bishop spoke about our Konkani Culture, Konkani language and above all to give due respect and equal rights to the girl child and women. Fr. Melvynn spoke on the need to teach and develop interest in our children our mother tongue Konkani. All guests and donors present were felicitated with flower bouquets.

The Konkani Cultural Program was further continued by the children and Association Members with Rib tickling Comedy Skits, Songs and Dance turned all present in a laughing mood.

“Noven Jevann” followed immediately for around 500 people, with 7 types of vegetable delicacies and “Vorn”, which reminded everyone of their nostalgic years in Mangalore.

The Program culminated by singing “Laudate” from all the Association Members.

The entire program was compered by Henry Sequira with his eloquent style.
