Completion of 50 years to Inclusion of Sindhi in Eighth Schedule

Governor calls for harnessing technology to preserve Sindhi and other regional languages; Advani recalls historic moment in parliament

Governor of Maharashtra Ch Vidyasagar Rao today called for harnessing technology to reach out to the new generation to preserve Sindhi and other regional languages. The Governor also stressed the need to promote Sindhi among Non Sindhi students by instituting scholarships.

 

The Governor was speaking at an event to mark the completion of 50 years to the inclusion of Sindhi language in the eighth schedule of the Indian constitution at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai on Saturday (3 June). The event was organised by the National Council for Promotion of Sindhi Language. Sindhi was included in the eighth schedule in the year 1967.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani was especially present.

“In the history of human civilization, few communities have suffered such trauma and pain as the Sindhis did in the aftermath of the Partition. To their supreme credit, the Sindhis transformed themselves into one of the most successful communities, perhaps anywhere in the world on the strength of hard work and determination,” said the Governor.

Advani recalls the historic moment in Parliament

Speaking on the occasion, Lal Krishna Advani recalled that he was present when former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had spoken in favour of inclusion of Sindhi in the Eighth schedule of the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha. He said completion of 50 years to the inclusion of Sindhi was an event of historic significance and called upon MPs and MLAs to create awareness about the event among people.

Advani said Sindhi language was written using Devnagari script until 17th Century. He called for renewed efforts to promote Sindhi language. Advani presented a copy of the English – Sindhi dictionary authored by Captain George Stack to Governor Vidyasagar Rao.
Vinod Tawde, Minister for Education, Dr Nirmala Wadhwani, Minister of State for Women and Child Welfare, Gujarat, Pratibha Advani, Ashish Shelar, Dr Ravi Tekchandani, Director of National Council for Promotion of Sindhi Language, Smt Aruna Jethwani, Vice Chairperson, National Council for Promotion of Sindhi Language were prominent among those present.
