Railway budget proposes two rail corridors for Mumbai

Mumbai (The Hindu): Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday proposed two new rail corridors — an elevated on from Churchgate to Virar and CST to Panvel —for the city' suburban network.

A special purpose vehicle will be formed for the proposed bullet train project along the Ahmedabad-Mumbai high-speed rail corridor.

The CST-Panvel route will be connected to a metro system that will link the Mumbai airport and the proposed Navi Mumbai airport.

Projects under MUTP-III, to the tune of Rs. 11,000 crore, have got a go ahead by the Niti Ayog. These include rail routes along the harbour line as well as introduction of 47 new 12-car rakes.

Mr. Prabhu also announced that the height of all the low platforms will be raised as a safety measure and trespass control in mid-suburban section will be implemented at 22 locations.
