Residents oppose Metro Line 4 claiming threat to environment

Mumbai, (The Hindu): Over 100 residents of Ghatkopar gathered in Garodia Nagar on Sunday morning to protest the construction of Metro Line 4 through residential areas in their locality.

The line from Wadala to Kasarvadavli, Thane, is set to pass through Garodia Nagar in Ghatkopar (East). The protesters are opposed to this route alignment as they claim it poses a threat to their peaceful living environment and the greenery.

“A baby is about to be born in our house which faces the proposed Metro line. This construction directly impacts the sanctity of our household,” Vaneera Raman, a resident who has been living in the area for decades, said.

Residents said they did not receive any notice before the construction and only became aware once the soil testing had begun. “We have appealed to Praveen Darade, additional metropolitan commissioner, and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis through a letter on June 18, but are yet to receive a response,” Pravin Chheda, a former BMC corporator from N-ward, said.

In the letter, residents asked for the Amar Mahal Junction-Barrister Nath Pai Road-Pantnagar-Laxmi Nagar stretch to be excluded from the construction.

“We don’t want this 16,000 crore project to be a waste. We have proposed that the line run along the Eastern Express Highway providing connectivity to Ramabai Nagar, Bhandup and Kannamwar Nagar, and Vikhroli,” Sunilbhai Joisar, one of the conveners of the movement, said.

The protesters said if their appeals go unheard they will take the matter to court.
