Kerber, Muguruza advance at Wimbledon

London, (IANS): German tennis ace Angelique Kerber advanced to the second round at Wimbledon defeating American Irina Falconi 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday.

Kerber, World No.1, needed one hour and 27 minutes to beat the 27-year-old Falconi, reports Efe.

The 2016 Wimbledon finalist's serve was broken once in each set, but four breaks was all the double Grand Slam champion needed to seal the win.

Kerber is set to play against Belgian Kirsten Flipkens who defeated Japanese Misaki Doi 6-4, 6-3.

On the other hand, Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza, the 2015 Wimbledon finalist, passed into the second round by defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-4.

The Caracas-born Muguruza is set to play against the winner from the match between Belgian Yanina Wickmayer and Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine.

Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, seeded no. 16, passed into the second round also as she got the better of Australian Anastasia Rodionova 3-6, 7-6(6), 9-7.
