Karnataka forest minister Rai claims grown-up children cannot be controlled

Mangaluru (TOI) : "Do you know what your children are doing?,"retorted district in charge minister B Ramanath Rai on Monday.

This was to a query on his son being roughed up by the public for allegedly partying on a private road and creating nuisance at Srimangala in Kodagu district on Sunday.

"The law of land should apply to my son, if he has committed a mistake. Small mistakes happen and if he has done something which is punishable, let him be punished," said Rai. "Till now has he interfered in my work? Do you know what your children are doing,"questioned Rai to the media persons.

He substantiated his claim saying that once children grow up they are beyond parents' control. He cited union minister DV Sadananda Gowda's son Karthik's case saying, "some people pressured me to hold a protest, but I did not since I know it's difficult to keep a tab on what your children are doing after they cross certain age."

On Sunday, Rai's Deepu and two of his friends—Tejas and Ganesh—were partying in their car parked on a private road leading to the house of former gram panchayat president Mandamada Tejappa. Disturbed by the loud music and shouting, Tejappa and neighbours asked the trio leave the place. Taking offence to the objection, the trio entered into an argument with the public, asking them who they are to question them. Later villagers trashed the trio, angered by their behaviour. At Srimangala police station police made the both parties strike a compromise and settled the case by taking written undertakings from both.

BJP trying to draw mileage from DSP ganapathi issue: Rai on Monday defended the government saying that the opposition, especially BJP, was trying to draw political mileage out of DSP Ganapathi's suicide. "Why they are silent on DSP Handibag's suicide? Is it because BJP and Sangh Parivar are involved," he questioned.

KJ George resigned voluntarily as he did not want to embarrass the party and government. "What is the BJP leaders doing. Many of them have criminal cases against him and they are holding on to position. Look at the Centre, as many as 14 union ministers have cases against them, has anyone resigned," he lambasted.
