Mangaluru (The Hindu): An 11-member gang assaulted a 38-year-man, who had recently been released from prison on bail in connection with a murder case, near Maripalla Junction in Bantwal Rural police station limits on Wednesday.

Additional Superintendent of Police Vincent Shantkumar said Haneef (38) had been released on bail 20 days ago in connection with murder of Rifai, an autorickshaw driver, in Bantwal in August 2014. On Wednesday afternoon Haneef came on his brother’s motorcycle and got down at the Maripalla Junction.

As his brother was leaving Maripalla Junction, 11 persons came in a car and assaulted Haneef. As they left the place, Haneef’s brother and passer-by arranged to shift Haneef to a private hospital in Mangaluru. Mr. Shantkumar said Haneef’s condition was critical.

Mr. Shantkumar said Haneef’s brother has suspected involvement of Jabbar, an accused involved in many criminal cases and his alleged associates, in the assault. The police were trying to trace the accused.
