SSLC Results: Slew of initiatives see Dakshina Kannada climb five positions to third this year

Mangaluru (TOI): Mane-Mana-Beti, a cluster exchange programme to convince children stop going to Madrasa and study, special classes for slow learners and frequent interaction with parents. This is how the education department in the Dakshina Kannada district climbed to third place in SSLC results this year, which was in eight place last year.

Regaining its old glory, DK district has secured third place in the state with 88.01 results. Around 33,851 students from DK appeared for SSLC examination, among them 16,179 are girls and 17,672 are boys. "Our efforts to get back where we were had paid off and we are happy that DK has secured a third place in the state," said elated Walter H D'Mello, DDPI, DK district, speaking to TOI. The DK district has 542 high schools including 167 government run school.

According to sources, one of the school situated in Surathkal has received zero percent results.

It had stood third in 2005 with a pass percentage of 73.9. In 2006, DK stood at 11th position when its pass percentage slipped to 72.87. In 2007, it stood fifth with 82.09%; sixth in 2008 (76.6%); fourth in 2009 (82.02%), eighth in 2010 (72.75%). Though the percentage had increased in 2011, the position had slipped to 21 in 2011 and the position had increased to seventh in 2012.

Three year ago, that is in 2013, the district stood at 24th position with 78.77 per cent. In 2014, the pass percentage had increased to 79.15 per cent and the position had slipped to 29 while last year it rose to eight position with 79.39 percent and third place in quality of result in the Karnataka state.

Explaining how the ball kept rolling to achieve the goal, Walter recalled that Mane (home)-mana (mind)-beti (visit) at at grass root level to increased confidence among students and teachers meet their parents to stress on education. While BEO's of every zones zeroed in students who score in between 0 to 35 marks and are special importance to do better with special classes in the morning and evening. The Department of Public Instruction had completed entire SSLC portions well in advance. "The remaining months were dedicated for revision and preparatory exams," he pointed out.
