Young musicians dedicate rocking evening to Konkani

Mangaluru: Konkani music lovers, young and old generation in city were mesmerized by head banging and foot tapping music during Konkani on the Rocks-2, on Sunday evening.

Konkani on the Rocks-2 was organised by a bunch of professional musicians and singers to aid various charitable projects. The uniqueness of the show was that Konkani songs in pure traditional music were re-transformed into rock music, a genre loved by gen-x.
Dilraj Rodrigues, a bass guitarist and member of the 'Teetotalers', said his team was formed in May 2012, consisting of fun-loving friends with an ardent passion for music. The band comprises of enthusiastic professionals who have devoted their time for the love of Konkani music.

"We are bunch of crazy people, who take time out of busy life to reach out to our passion," Dilraj added.

Eric Alexander Ozario, singer, composer, full-time cultural activist, whose two Konkani songs were modified into rock genre, gave thumps up to the experiment in Konkani music. Speaking to TOI, he said that "I welcome the experiment that done by young musicians. Strongly believe only such newness can keep music, tradition alive and fresh. It's a new way to attract to youth to Konkani. However, essence of language should not be lost in experiment."

Further Dilraj added that most from the team were full time professionals in various fields, working in India and across seas. It was their friendship that got them together to put up a Konkani Rock Show - the first rock show in the history of Konkani music was held in 2012. This season they have worked zealously for four months to compose music and tunes for the Rock Show. "We again came together to present another show with no personal monetary benefits and it's a huge opportunity for passionate team to perform in Mangaluru introducing a new genre of Konkani music to the wonderful music lovers of this city" said Dilraj adding that it is tough to job to balance music between pure rock and Konkani.

Singers included Elton Nazareth, Jacqueline Fernandes, Ashish Jason Palanna and Ria D'Souza. Musicians- Roshan D'Souza, Angelore ( Lead guitar), Jeethan Carlo (Lead guitar), Dilraj Rodrigues (Bass Guitar),Sanjay Rodrigues (Keyboards), Ivan Pereira (Drums).
Roylin Correa, a UK trained sound engineer from Mumbai did the sound mixing of the event.
