Lok Sabha by poll: BJP lose Ballari and Mandya; win Shivamogga after tough fight

Bengaluru: In what can be called as a humiliating defeat to BJP, the saffron party lost Ballari and Mandya seats, while it won Shivamogga after a tough fight. By-polls for the three Lok Sabha constituencies - Shivamogga, Ballari and Mandya; and two Assembly constituencies - Ramanagara and Jamkhandi, which were held on Saturday, was seen as a prestigious popularity test for the ruling Congress-JDS coalition in Karnataka.

BJP's B Y Raghavendra, the son of former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa defeated JD(S)' Madhu Bangarappa by more than 50,000 votes in Shivamogga by-polls. B Y Raghavendra polled 5,43,306 votes while Madhu Bangarappa polled 4,91,158 votes. Mahima Patel from JD(U) garnered 5,278 votes. Madhu Bangarappa however gave a tough fight and has managed to get close to 4 lac votes.

The JD(S) candidate in Mandya L R Shivarame Gowda has won by more than one lac votes by defeating the BJP. Shivarame Gowda had taken a huge lead against BJP's Dr Siddaramaiah in the initial round of counting itself. L R Shivarame Gowda polled 494,728 votes while Dr Siddaramaiah (BJP) polled 205,357 votes.

In Bellary, V S Ugrappa defeated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongman B Sriramulu's sister and former MP J Shantha. The Congress candidate former chief minister Siddaramaiah’s confidant VS Ugrappa defeated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongman B Sriramulu's sister and former MP J Shantha with winning 5 lac votes. Ugrappa has also broken Congress former president Sonia Gnadhi and Sriramulu's earlier record by getting more than 2 lakh votes. The results in Bellary is the biggest shock for BJP.
