Mumbai (The Hindu): NCP president Sharad Pawar on Thursday voiced his support for Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur, who quit the protest against ABVP hooliganism on campus following alleged rape threats. He also lashed out against those in power for creating an ‘atmosphere of terror’.

Mr. Pawar said those who believe in democracy and women empowerment will stand against such intimidation. “This is not the first time such an atmosphere of terror is being unleashed. The Haryana (Health) Minister’s comments expose the kind of mindset that exists,” he said. Earlier, Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij had said those supporting Ms. Kaur's campaign against ABVP are ‘pro-Pakistan’.

"Those in power are not easing the situation, but only increasing the tension. All political parties should come together in raising their voice against such ideology." Mr. Pawar said.

Ms. Kaur, the daughter of a Kargil martyr, has been subjected to intense online trolling for her stance against the RSS-backed students' outfit ABVP. The 20-year-old also created a video campaign advocating peace between India and Pakistan.

She had also complained of receiving rape threats from ABVP members, following which an FIR has been registered. Condemning the threats, Mr. Pawar said that the NCP’s campus wing will raise its voice against such intimidation and terror in universities.
