Published On : 23 Dec 2015

Mumbai (The Hindu): Gangster Chhota Rajan will be brought to Mumbai on January 7. An arrest warrant has been issued by the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court against him.

Rajan is the main accused in the killing of veteran journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, who was shot dead on June 11, 2011.

In his order, Special MCOCA judge A L Pansare said, “Rajan to be jointly tried along with other arrested accused.” The order also read, “Production warrant to be issued against Chhota Rajan and he should remain present in court on January 7.”

Special public prosecutor Dileep Shah told The Hindu , “The court cited Supreme Court judgments that said the trial must commence where there is ample evidence and material on record.” He said, “Looking at the chargesheet, there is ample evidence against Rajan and issued the warrant.”

Mr Shah also said that the court took note of the fact that Mumbai police are not doing any investigation and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) further investigated the matter.

Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) Sunil Deshmukh told The Hindu , “The court has directed the Superintendent of Tihar Jail to produce Rajan.”

He also said the court took note of the fact that the CBI had to register a case against Rajan but there has been no mention of it by the agency.” Mr Deshmukh said, “Rajan will now be jointly tried with 10 other accused.”

Rajan was brought to India on November 6, 2015. The trial in J Dey came up for hearing on December 18.

The police informed the court that the case has been transferred to the CBI and it would go to the special CBI court.

The judge sought a clarification as to whether the CBI would investigate the matter further and whether the present trial would continue in this court or not.

The other accused in the case are: Jigna Vora (out on bail), Satiah Kaliya, Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shendge, Mangesh Agawane, Vinod Asrani (Dead), Paulson Joseph (out on bail) and Deepak Sisodia
