Mumbai (The Hindu): Robbery accused, who was in judicial custody since 2013, hurled his slipper at a Sessions Court judge when he was produced in the court on Tuesday afternoon. The accused later told the police that he flung his slipper as he was infuriated about the time his trial was taking.
The accused Madhav Chauhan, a resident of Chembur, was arrested by the RCF police in connection with a robbery case of 2012, the Colaba police said. Chauhan was subsequently remanded to judicial custody and had been lodged in the Arthur Road central jail while his case went to trial. On Tuesday, Chauhan was taken to the court for a hearing in his case. Police personnel who escorted him from the prison to the court said that he was sitting patiently and calmly while awaiting his turn.
Around 12:30 pm, when his case came up for hearing, he was escorted to the box for the accused and the hearing began. As the lawyers were going through the preliminary motions of the hearing, Chauhan suddenly took off his slipper and threw it in the direction of Sessions Judge SV Patil. The slipper landed on the table of the judge. Police personnel on duty at the court immediately rushed forward and dragged Chauhan out of the courtroom even as he hurled abuses at the Judge, said officers.
“Chauhan was taken to the lock up inside the court and questioned by police officers, and he has said that he was frustrated over the long time that his trial was taking, and that he was fed up of being in jail after spending three years at Arthur Road. The Colaba police were subsequently informed about the incident,” said a police officer.
The Colaba police registered a case for deterring a public servant from discharging his duty under the IPC against Chauhan and are conducting inquiries against him, said officers.
