4 states keen on Karnataka model of skill development

Bengaluru, (DHNS): Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh governments are keen on replicating the Karnataka model of skill development training for youth.

Each of these states has sought specific information on curating courses specific to their region. In Karnataka, there has been an overwhelming response to the “Kaushalya” the skill development project with 6.94 lakh youth registering themselves online ever since the project was launched this year.

The Rajasthan government has evinced interest in starting skill development programmes for youth in renewable energy such as solar power and wind energy, Muralidhar Halappa, chairman, Skill Development Corporation said.

Andhra Pradesh has sought information in personality development, while West Bengal is keen on industrial training. Uttar Pradesh is interested in giving thrust to home appliances and automobiles and wants its youth back home to be trained in these sectors, Halappa said.

The Karnataka model basically works like this: Those interested (age 18 to 35 years) in getting skill training can register on the department’s website Kaushalkar.com. These candidates are called for a counselling to ascertain whether their aspiration for a particular course matches his or her aptitude, before actually starting the training programme. The department will soon be launching two new programmes in skill development. As many as 22 Government Tool Room and Training Centres (GTTC) across the state will be imparting skill training in CNC programme and operation etc.
