Udupi(The Hindu): There is no BJP-Modi wave now, says Minister. Minister for Women and Child Development Jaimala said on Friday that the Congress was campaigning for the civic polls for Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) on the basis of its achievements here for the last five years.

Speaking to presspersons while campaigning for the party here, Ms. Jaimala said that she was not the star campaigner of the party, but the achievements of the party in the CMC were. People knew about the development programmes taken up by the Congress in the city in the last five years. There was no Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Modi wave here now as was the case during the State Assembly elections three months ago.

This [BJP-Modi wave] was responsible for the poor showing of the Congress during the Assembly polls. But now there was no such wave in the State. “The BJP is asking for votes in the civic polls without doing any work. We are seeking votes on the basis of our performance,” she said.

The Minister said that the Congress would perform well across the State in the local body polls to be held on August 31. The programmes of the previous Siddaramaiah government and the present coalition government headed by H.D. Kumaraswamy would also help the Congress in these local polls. People had noticed that the coalition government had waived the loans of farmers as soon as it came to power, she said.

To a query, Ms. Jaimala said that the damage due to floods following heavy rain in Udupi district had been estimated at Rs 75 crore. The government had already decided to provide an amount of Rs 25 crore for compensating these damage in the district, she said.
