Udupi (The Hindu): The district police on Saturday arrested a former Executive Officer (EO) of the Sri Mookambika Temple in a case related to the siphoning off gold ornaments, donated by the devotees to the temple.

K. Annamalai, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu that L.S. Maruti was arrested near Kollur. The accused was the Executive Officer of the temple from July, 2012, to August, 2015.

Instead of keeping the gold in safe custody in the treasury of the temple himself and depositing it in the bank, he used to give it to the clerk at the temple B. Shivaram for safekeeping. However, Mr. Maruthi used to sign the temple ledger stating that the gold was in his possession. Now 413 grams of gold shown to be in possession of Mr. Maruti in the ledger was missing. Mr. Maruti had been arrested under Section 409 and Section 34 of the IPC. A case had been registered at the Kollur police station, Mr. Annamalai said.
