Bengaluru, (DHNS): H D Kumaraswamy said on Sunday that he would resign from the chief minister’s post if he failed to waive crop loans within a week.

“I am not indebted to the people of the state. I am indebted to the Congress (for making me the chief minister). I appeal to farmers to give me a week -- nobody should commit suicide. If I fail to waive crop
loans, I will resign voluntarily. I don’t want anybody pressuring me to resign,”Kumaraswamy told.

Speaking after garlanding former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s portrait on his 54th death anniversary, at the Vidhana Soudha, Kumaraswamy, however, made it apparent that he would not
take any policy decisions without consulting his alliance partner.

The BJP has called for a statewide bandh on Monday, as Kumaraswamy failed to announce the waiver “within 24 hours” of coming to power.

Attacking both BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa and a section of farmer representatives, Kumaraswamy said, “I don’t want any farmer organisation building pressure on me. I know what such organisations did during the elections. I will not stick to the seat of power.

Yeddyurappa should stop provoking the farmers to commit suicide. He should be more humane. What if some farmer commits suicide
listening to politicians? What will become of the orphaned children of such farmers? ”

Kumaraswamy, who has already reviewed the financial position of the state during a meeting with officials on May 23, held a meeting with retired IAS officer Subramanya to weigh waiving crop loans.
