Bengaluru, (DHNS): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking "immediate steps" towards appointment of judges to the Karnataka high court.

This comes amid protests by the Advocates Association, Bengaluru, (AAB) over the delay in appointment of judges.

Siddaramaiah pointed out that the Karnataka high court was functioning at 38% of its total strength, with a vacancy of 47 judges against a sanctioned strength of 62. "At present, there are about 2.5 lakh cases pending before the Karnataka high court as well as Dharwad and Kalaburagi benches. The load of cases is increasing by the day, while the number of judges is decreasing," Siddaramaiah wrote.

According to the letter, 150 judges had been appointed to various high courts since January 2017. Of them, only two were appointed to the Karnataka high court.

Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda also wrote to Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday, seeking appointment of judges to the Karnataka High Court "at the earliest." Gowda, along with former minister S Suresh Kumar, had earlier held talks with a delegation of the AAB.
