Bengaluru, (DHNS): Millets will be part of mid-day meals in 10 government and aided schools as part of a pilot project that started on Friday.
Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, who inaugurated the project, said that the aim was to ensure availability of nutritious and healthy food to children.
"The project is being taken up in association with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat). The millet-based food items will be a part of menu two days in a week," said Akshayapatra vice-president Chanchalapati Dasa said.
The project will cover 1,622 beneficiaries across 10 schools. The implementation will be undertaken in a phased and systematic approach under the direction of leading subject matter experts and nutritionists, he said.
The Agriculture minister said the government has no role in the pilot project. "We will look into the report on pilot project and decide on adding millets to the mid-day meal," he said.
The Agriculture department will bring millet farmers in contact with the Akshayapatra Foundation to facilitate marketing of agriculture produce.
