Protests break out, call for bandh in Mandya

Published On : 06 Sep 2016

Bengaluru, DHNS: Protesters staged demonstrations at various places along the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway crippling traffic, following the Supreme Court’s direction to Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu for the next 10 days.

Farmers burnt effigies of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitaa and urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah not to discharge water as the State is reeling under a severe drought.

The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) members staged a ‘Jal Satyagraha’ at the Cauvery river near Srirangapatna.

After the special meeting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said an all-party meeting will be held on Tuesday to discuss the situation and further actions. The Chief Minister also appealed people to calm and not to get emotional.

BJP State President B S Yeddyurappa asked to call for special assembly to discuss the issue.

President of Cauvery Hitharakshana Samithi G Madegowda said he would speak to Siddaramaiah and decide on the next course of action.
