Udupi, (The Hindu): Since the water in the Swarna river had gone down steeply and was enough only for seven days, the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) has decided to supply drinking water in the city once in four days from Wednesday till the monsoon sets in. Hitherto, water was being supplied in the city on alternate days.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Meenakshi Bannanje, CMC president and D. Manjunathaiah, CMC Commissioner, said that water in the Swarna had reached dead storage level on April 29. Hence, the CMC was pumping water from large holes in the Swarna riverbed at Shiroor, Mane, Mathada Gundi, Bhandarybettu, Puttige Mutt and other places with the help of boat-mounted pumpsets. The water from these places was being supplied to Baje dam from where it was pumped to the city.

However, now the water in these large holes were estimated to meet the drinking water needs of the city for only for seven days and there had been no heavy rain so far. Hence, it had been decided to supply water to the city once in four days till the monsoon sets in.

Accordingly, the 35 municipal wards in the city had been divided into two parts, and water would be supplied to these two parts once in four days. Hence on May 24, May 28, June and June 5, water would be supplied to Kola, Vadabhandeshwara, Malpe Central, Kodavoor, Kalmady, Kasturba Nagar, Sagri, Mooduperampalli, Indira Nagar, Chitpady, Badagabettu, Indrali, Shiribeedu, Bannanje, Ambalpady, Ajjarkadu, Kinnimulki, Bailoor, Volakadu, Tenkapete and Kunjibettu wards.

While on May 27, May 31, June 4 and June 8, water would be supplied to Saralebettu, Eshwar Nagar, Manipal, Kakkunje, Karambally, Moodabettu, Kodankur, Nittur, Subrahmanya Nagar, Gopalapura, Kadiyali, Gundibail, Settibettu and Parkala wards.

If by any chance, drinking water was not supplied to any ward on the dates stated above, the CMC would supply water to that ward through tankers on that day only. For use of water for drinking purposes only, individual houses (other than apartments) can call these telephone numbers: 8496989248, 8496989166, 8496989184, 8496989122, 8496989759 or 9448507244.
