We will work together for overall development of the region: MLA

Mangaluru South MLA D. Vedavyasa Kamath on Friday said legislators and the Minister from the district will work together for the overall development of Dakshina Kannada and Mangaluru city.

Responding to a list of demands from the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry during a felicitation programme to legislators and the minister here, Mr. Kamath said he was aware many works that needed to be executed for the overall development of the district. Being the first-time legislator, Mr. Kamath said, he has a special interest in the overall growth of the region and would work along with various stakeholders to fulfil the expectations.

In her introductory address, KCCI president Vathika Pai drew the attention of the people’s representatives to several issues the district and Mangaluru have been facing.

Container traffic

Ms. Pai sought the speedy implementation of a greenfield berth exclusively to handle container traffic at New Mangalore Port Trust; installation of Category 1-ILS approach lights at Mangaluru International Airport to enhance visibility for landing aircraft; speedy implementation of the green bypass project across Shiradi Ghat to enhance connectivity between the coast and the hinterlands; overall development of Mangaluru city and improving the railway network in Mangaluru region.

On the industrial growth sector, the KCCI president urged the formation of Baikampady Industrial Area Township Authority; execution of Plastic Park at Ganjimutt; developing industries in the region; promotion of tourism and basic infrastructure at Yeyyadi Industrial Area.

Piped gas

Ms. Pai said with Kochi- Kootanad- Mangaluru Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) pipeline nearing completion, authorities in Karnataka should take immediate steps to invite bids for providing piped LNG supply to households in Mangaluru.

If the service provider is identified and work of pipe laying starts immediately, LNG can be supplied to households immediately after the commissioning of the main pipeline, she said.

Other legislators from the district, including district in-charge Minister U.T. Khader, were not present owing to various other engagements.

Chamber vice-president P.B. Abdul Ahmed and others were present.
