Bengaluru, (DHNS): This year's Diabetes Day shows that one in 10 women in the world is living with diabetes.

Department of Non-Communicable diseases said that more screenings for diabetes are being conducted due to increased prevalence of the disease in the state.

According to Dr K V S Mahesh, consultant, diabetologist, Narayana Medical Centre, the hospital receives around two to three diabetes patients of age group between 25 and 30 years in a week.

The main cause for the increase in the incidence of the disease in youngsters is irregular sleeping and eating habits, Mahesh added.

"The working conditions of many of our youngsters require them to adapt their body clock frequently to different time zones leading to an imbalance in metabolism. This imbalance triggers obesity and hence making them prone to diabetes," he said.

Dr Prakash Patil, deputy director of non-communicable disease said all 30 districts in the state are covered under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, CVD and Stroke, which was started as a pilot project in 2010.

The department officials said that free screening for the disease is provided at most of the government hospitals and people should avail the facility to understand their diabetes levels.
