Bengaluru, DHNS: From now on, engineering students of all colleges affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) can look forward to taking exams that are fairly free from malpractice.

For the first time, the VTU is introducing barcodes for all answer sheets. The improved security system will come into force for exams scheduled for December this year. The system will check illegal insertion of answer sheets into the booklet and replacement of the booklet itself.

The VTU would be the first state university in Karnataka to introduce the high-security system for answer books. In 2011, the VTU had introduced barcodes for the face sheets of answer booklets, Vice-Chancellor Karisiddappa said.

On the barcoded face sheets of answer books, students would have to write the university seat number (USN), mention the subject code and put their signature. Invigilators will separate this sheet from the answer book and store it separately. When answer booklets get digitised and go for evaluation online, evaluators would not know the identity of the college or students. Even those who scan the sheets would be unaware of the details as the face sheet and answer books will remain separated.

At the time of compiling the marks, the barcodes on the face sheet and answer sheets will be tallied. Discrepancies, if any, would come to light while mapping the barcodes, the vice-chancellor said. “The security measures are intended to make the examination process transparent,” Karisiddappa said. “It will restore students’ confidence in the system.” On average, 24 lakh papers are evaluated per semester at the VTU, and 10-12% of the answer scripts go for revaluation, he added.

According to VTU Registrar H N Jagannatha Reddy, each answer book contains 42 pages. If students need more space to write the answers, they will get another booklet instead of single sheets. He said the university would issue circulars to all colleges soon, explaining the new security measures. “The digital valuation is intended to declare exam results on time,” he said.

Another measure being introduced is the scanning of answer books by the university itself. Until now, the scanning was outsourced at a cost of Rs 14 crore. The state government has provided software to encourage in-house scanning. The scanning cost would come down to Rs 3-4 crore, Reddy said.

The vice-chancellor said the prototype answers (scheme of evaluation) for each question paper would be prepared by the board of examiners after being evaluated by teachers. The answers would be circulated to all evaluation centres. Once exams conclude, answers would be http://canaranews.com/uploaded on the VTU website for the benefit of students. This is the first time that answers are being http://canaranews.com/uploaded, Karisiddappa said.
